Knauf to increase tracking of fuel use and emissions across supply chain through use of EPA tool.

Shelbyville, IN, December 11, 2024 — Knauf Insulation, Inc. (Knauf), a family-owned business and one of the largest fiberglass insulation manufacturers in the U.S., announces joining EPA SmartWay Transport Partnership. This collaboration provides a framework to assess the environmental and energy efficiency of goods movement within supply chains.

Knauf’s participation in the SmartWay program further demonstrates its commitment to reaching a 30% reduction on scope 3 carbon emissions by 2032. Through the program, Knauf will have access to SmartWay tools to identify and collect critical data points that will generate and quantify freight emission reports. Participation advances supply chain sustainability by measuring, benchmarking and improving freight transportation data efficiency to identify how to reduce carbon emissions across the supply chain.

“Collecting accurate data across the value chain can be challenging, however, becoming a SmartWay partner improves knowledge on our indirect emissions and enables us to develop a reduction roadmap throughout our value chain,” said Gabriela Fleury, Knauf director of sustainability. “There’s still a long road ahead of us, however, programs like SmartWay are a step in the right direction to reduce our carbon footprint.”

ABOUT SMARTWAY

SmartWay provides a comprehensive system for tracking, documenting and sharing information about fuel use and freight emissions across supply chains. The EPA launched this voluntary program in 2004 to reduce freight transportation-related emissions via the adoption of advanced fuel-saving technologies. The framework helps companies identify and select more efficient freight carriers, transport modes, equipment and operational strategies to improve supply chain sustainability and lower costs from goods movement. SmartWay partners have contributed to saving 379 million barrels of oil, $52 billion on fuel costs, 162 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, 2.8 million short tons of nitrous oxide and 114,000 short tons of particulate matter. This is equivalent to eliminating annual energy use in over 24 million homes, according to the EPA. More information on SmartWay is available at: epa.gov/smartway.
