Are there any health concerns around fiberglass insulation?

Fiberglass insulation products have benefited from over 75 years of scientific research across population and animal studies, exposure and biosolubility research. Major health authorities conclude that fiberglass insulation is not classifiable as to carcinogenicity in humans (IARC Group 3) and that the most common effect is temporary mechanical irritation of the skin, eyes, and upper airways. Following stndard work practices (such as wearing longer sleeves/pants, gloves, eye protection, and respiratory protection when dusty) minimizes any irritation.

Fiberglass insulation has been found to be safe to manufacture, install, and use when recommended work practices are followed to reduce mild mechanical irritation.

Do I need to wear protective clothing, masks, or gloves to install fiberglass?

Installing fiberglass insulation can cause temporary, mechanical skin irritation. Products made with Knauf Insulation’s patented ECOSE technology with bio-based binder are known to greatly reduce that irritation. However, protective clothing, masks, and gloves are always recommended when handling glass fibers.

Is fiberglass insulation safe?

Fiberglass insulation is not considered dangerous. Other than minor mechanical irritation caused by handling the material, fiberglass is safe to manufacture, install, and use when recommended work practices are followed.

What is bio solubility and bio persistent?

Bio solubility is the term used to describe material, like fiberglass insulation, that can be quickly dissolved by bodily fluids and cleared from the lungs. Bio persistent materials are considered to remain in the lungs for a longer period of time.
