The Challenge
The Sonoran Studio project, led by the Architectural Resource Team (A|R|T), is a pioneering example of sustainable architecture in Arizona. This initiative aims to create a certified "Living Building," which strives to have a net positive environmental impact by generating more energy than it uses. It is the first project of its kind in Arizona, highlighting A|R|T’s commitment to environmentally responsible design.
Living Buildings must achieve net-zero energy, net-positive water, and carbon neutrality, presenting significant challenges, especially in the extreme conditions of the Sonoran Desert. To meet these standards, the project integrates a 20KW solar system and battery for net-zero energy consumption. Additionally, the design incorporates low-carbon, local, reclaimed, and recycled materials to ensure economical and sustainable construction.
The Solution
The A|R|T team selected Knauf's EcoBatt insulation for its superior quality and alignment with their sustainability goals. Insulation plays a crucial role in this project, minimizing the building’s energy needs and maximizing the efficiency of the solar power system.
"It was extremely important that the insulation not only meet or exceed the performance objectives established from the initial energy modeling to exceed Net-Zero Energy targets, but also meet the demanding metrics of the Red-List free material requirements of the LBC Material Petal," said Doug McCord, Principal and Director of Design at A|R|T.
Knauf insulation products meet Red-List free criteria, ensuring they do not contain harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde or phenol. This decision was also influenced by Knauf's commitment to sustainability and the use of recycled materials.
"I like Knauf's commitment to sustainability; it is most aligned with our own core values," said McCord.
Pairing a 2" continuous insulation system with Knauf EcoBatt insulation within the stud cavities, the building far exceeds Climate Zone 2 requirements to ensure optimal thermal performance. This strategy greatly reduces the energy demand from the facility enabling the design team to downsize other building components such as the mechanical and renewable energy systems.
The Sonoran Studio project will be Arizona's first certified Living Building, setting a new standard for sustainable architecture in a desert climate. Knauf's insulation products played a crucial role in realizing this vision, proving that thoughtful material selection and innovative design can lead to buildings that are beneficial for both people and the planet.
