Knauf Earthwool 1000° Pipe Insulation Now UL Certified to Protect Plastic Pipes in Plenum and Exposed Structure Interior Spaces

First Formaldehyde-Free Option for This Application

SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (April 14, 2022)—Knauf Insulation North America (Knauf) announced today that its Earthwool 1000° Pipe Insulation has earned Underwriters Laboratories (UL) certification to protect polymer pipes (i.e. PVC, CPVC, and polypropylene) in plenum and exposed structure interior spaces. Knauf Earthwool 1000° Pipe Insulation is the only formaldehyde-free option rated in this assembly (BSMP – Insulated Plastic Pipe Assemblies).

“UL certification is the gold standard so architects and engineers can feel confident using Earthwool in their specifications,” said Matt Parrish, President and CEO of Knauf Insulation North America. “We’re proud to be the first and only insulation manufacturer to offer a formaldehyde free option for plenum applications.”

Plenum spaces are areas where fire can easily spread so building codes have stringent requirements on what is allowed. Earthwool 1000° Pipe Insulation complies with the Fire Hazard Classification (FHC) Flame Spread Index 25/Smoke Developed Index 50 (commonly referred to as 25/50) when tested per ASTM E84 or UL 723.

Earthwool is the only fiberglass pipe insulation in the market that is formaldehyde-free. It uses ECOSE® Technology, a plant-based binder which is a more sustainable alternative to using phenol formaldehyde traditionally used in fiberglass products. The ASJ + jacket offers wrinkle- and dimple-resistant qualities, resulting in a clean, finished appearance.
