Stay cool and save money when the weather heats up

Summer’s long days and warm temperatures are perfect for outdoor fun — but they can also mean higher energy bills if your home isn’t prepared. With a few smart changes, you can keep your living spaces comfortable, save money, and reduce your environmental impact. Here are eight easy ways to make your home more energy-efficient this summer.

1. Cook outdoors

Ovens and stoves can raise your kitchen’s temperature. Fire up the grill or enjoy a cold lunch or picnic instead.

2. Limit electronics and get outside

It takes energy to use and charge all those electronic devices. Get outside and enjoy the summer as much as you can. Family bike ride, anyone?

3. Be smart about fans

Use ceiling fans to circulate cool air and beat the heat. Set them to rotate counterclockwise during the warm weather months (there’s usually a switch located on the side of the fan).

Remember: fans cool people but not rooms, so only use fans in rooms that are occupied.

4. Close your blinds

This tip is easy to forget, but vital. Keep your blinds, curtains, and shades closed during the day when the sun is hottest and brightest. This will help prevent warm air from building up in your home.

5. Insulate your attic

Nine out of 10 homes in the U.S. are under-insulated, leading to wasted money on utility bills. Adding insulation is the biggest impact you can make to lower your energy bills in the summer and year-round.

6. Seal up your home

All the little gaps and cracks in your home can be equivalent to leaving open a 3-foot-by-3-foot window where conditioned air can escape. Find out exactly where the leaks are by getting a home energy audit.

7. Run appliances at night

To keep your home cool, avoid using heat-releasing appliances such as dryers and dishwashers during the hottest part of the day.

8. Hang dry clothes

Use the summer heat to your advantage and hang dry your clothes outside.

For a Better World

These energy efficient tips will make your summer cooler and more comfortable, while lowering your energy bill and your carbon footprint — for the world we live in.
