Knauf Insulation Recycling Program Collects 3.5 Tons of Glass at The Big Machine Music City Grand Prix and Nashville Entertainment Districts

The Original Corner Pub-Green Hills Collected One-Half of All Recyclables; Glass will be used to manufacture Knauf Insulation products

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Aug 18, 2023) – Knauf Insulation, Inc. collected 3.5 tons of glass during the second year of its major glass recycling initiative with the Music City Grand Prix. The three-week competitive recycling program collected 3.5 tons of used glass bottles from well-known Nashville establishments including The Original Corner Pub-Green Hills, Losers Bar & Grill on Broadway, Luke's 32 Bridge, Losers in Midtown, and Jason Aldean's Kitchen + Rooftop Bar.

The Original Corner Pub-Green Hills came out on top by collecting over 3,500 pounds of glass bottles during the effort. Their staff received passes to the race and the collected bottles will be used as a raw material in Knauf's energy-efficient fiberglass insulation.

"We were very proud to work with Knauf Insulation again as our Official Glass Recycling Partner for this important effort and look forward to a long relationship. Their commitment to sustainable business practices and products is in harmony our city’s desire for a more sustainable Nashville. Our hometown means everything to us and we will continue to develop initiatives that impact our communities such as taking glass out of our landfills," said Big Machine Music City Grand Prix CEO, Matt Crews.

Knauf Insulation relies on recycled glass to manufacture its fiberglass insulation. All glass collected as part of this partnership is crushed into cullet and returned to Knauf’s manufacturing facilities. Knauf is heavily invested in improving glass recycling rates, with the company using 500 million pounds of recycled glass in its manufacturing process annually. Not only is this glass diverted from the landfill, using recycled glass reduces the amount of energy needed for manufacturing and decreases the amount of raw materials which need to be mined.

"We have always created innovative programs to shape the way the future is built, and we remain as passionate as ever about sustainability. That’s why we’re continuously looking for new ways to recycle, optimize our manufacturing process and design products that are better for the environment. Our partnership with the Big Machine Music City Grand Prix helps bring awareness to everyone that glass is not trash, rather a critical component in the building materials industry," said Nathan Walker, Senior Vice President, Customer Experience, Innovation, & Sales, at Knauf Insulation, Inc. "Worldwide we save 26 million glass bottles from landfills each month to use in our innovative products and Nashville has just helped us increase that number. We look forward to the future expansion of this effort in other U.S. cities."

"We are proud that our pub was such a considerable contributor to this year’s collection effort," said Jeremy Palmer, proprietor, The Original Corner Pub-Green Hills. "Our entire staff was excited to do something with the Grand Prix, and the contest made it easier for us, as a small establishment, to recycle. We go through many bottles each week and it can be overwhelming to sort and recycle everything. The large amount of glass we collected just proves to us how supportive our customer base is."
