Insulating for Sound

Insulation for Noise Reduction
Unwanted sound in buildings is not only distracting, but it can also impact comfort, privacy and productivity. That’s why contractors, engineers and architects choose fiberglass insulation to effectively decrease the transfer of sound in residential, commercial and industrial buildings.

FIBERGLASS INSULATION HELPS YOU DAMPEN UNWANTED SOUND

Sometimes referred to as soundproofing insulation, fiberglass insulation is more appropriately called acoustic insulation because it reduces the transfer of sound through walls, ceilings or ducts and into the spaces where people live, work and play. Some surface-applied insulation products can also absorb unwanted sound waves, further enhancing the acoustics of given spaces.

Think of public spaces such as movie theaters and concourses — those use acoustic insulation boards and acoustic blankets to cover walls and ceilings. Other acoustic insulation board, liner and wrap products are engineered to reduce noise transmission in ducts and plenums in heating and cooling systems.

A MORE SUSTAINABLE WAY TO ABSORB SOUND

Whether your project is the structure itself, or systems within the structure, we have high-performance solutions available in a complete line of fiberglass acoustic insulation products. Fiberglass formed into batts, blankets, rolls, boards, duct liner and pipe insulation absorbs sound across a range of frequencies.

Most of our fiberglass insulation is manufactured with ECOSE® Technology, our patented, formaldehyde-free bio-based binder — a smarter alternative to the phenol-formaldehyde (PF) binder traditionally used in fiberglass products. The bio-based binder holds our product together and gives the product its unique appearance.

Products Soundly Designed for Your Specific Needs
Acoustic insulation comes in a variety of forms to meet your unique application requirements. Products are available that cover a wide range of sound absorption capabilities, commonly expressed as an NRC value (noise reduction coefficient). The same features that make fiberglass thermally efficient translate directly to the insulation’s ability to absorb and reduce sound levels. Fiberglass batt or blanket insulation can be specified in filled-cavity applications to contribute to the STC (Sound Transmission Class) rating of assemblies.
What’s an NRC Value?
The NRC value represents the percent of sound directed at the surface that is absorbed by the fiberglass insulation.
What’s an STC Rating?
The STC rating represents the ability of an assembly to reduce sound decibel levels transferred through walls, ceilings and floors.
