We know our customers depend on Knauf. Today we find ourselves in unprecedented times. Following the World Health Organization's characterization of COVID-19 as a pandemic, we would like to keep all our customers informed of our commitment to business continuity.

First and foremost, we are focused on:

  • Protecting the health of our employees and customers
  • Enabling a remote workforce where feasible
  • Providing timely and accurate customer support
  • Sustaining business continuity and safely enabling our operations
We are committed to ensuring timely and robust communications and processes as we monitor the situation. We are putting measures in place to ensure the safety of our employees while continuing to manufacture our products and deliver for our customers. It is our intention to continue with high levels of customer service, but you may experience a delay in our response time. Please be patient as we work diligently to address all customer service needs.

We have established an internal task force, led by our Health and Safety department, to plan for potential impacts of COVID-19. Although this list is not exhaustive, here are some of the precautions we’re taking across our business.

Offices, Plant and Warehouse Facilities
As part of our normal practice, our facilities are cleaned and sanitized daily. Following guidance from the centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO), we’re increasing the frequency of cleaning and general hygiene maintenance—especially in high traffic and high-touch areas. In addition, we have suspended all plant tours and limited plant access to only those who have a clear reason to be on the site. There are no plans today to fully or partially suspend operations, unless mandated by local agency.

Products and Deliveries
We are working closely with our vendors to ensure our products continue to get shipped and delivered in a timely manner from our facilities and external warehouses. However, current conditions require us to be flexible as our transportations partners and other vendors determine their own policies and procedures for dealing with COVID-19. Knauf is committed to keeping customers up to date on changes in both product availability and delivery as this situation evolves.

Events & Travel
Our number one goal is to keep our employees, our customers and our communities healthy and safe. As a result, we have temporarily postponed or cancelled large external and internal gatherings, this includes plant tours, customer events, and trade show participation. In addition, we have cancelled all International travel and are limiting Domestic travel for KINA employees to only those trips deemed mission critical. We are mandating employees that have the ability to work from home do so. This will enabling fewer people in our facilities so that we can ensure social distancing, protect our employees, and safely continue servicing customers.

We are staying in close contact with the CDC as this situation evolves and will continue to make sure that our business practices and focus on the safety of our employees and customers are consistent with the most up to date information we are receiving from the CDC and WHO.

We are grateful to the over 2,000 Knauf team members and our vendor partners in North America who are working diligently to continue to provide our customers with the products and services they need to ensure business continuity.

Dear employees,

We are facing a challenging time. The Corona pandemic concerns not only everyone on an individual level, but all of us as society. And of course, we at Knauf are not unaffected by this situation. As always, your safety is our priority, and – particularly right now – your well-being and that of your loved ones is extremely important to us.

We are all concerned about our friends and families, especially the most vulnerable. At this moment in time, we have to look out for each other and have to follow certain rules to protect ourselves and everyone around us. At the same time, we are taking action on all levels of the company to guide our people and our business through these challenging times.

  • We want you to stay healthy: For every one of you who is physically required on site, we have implemented robust safety standards to mitigate the risks for infections in our plants and offices. We also encourage all of our leaders to support remote working wherever this is possible. Regardless of whether you work on site or at home, we ask you to follow the rules set by the World Health Organization and by your respective government. That includes to maintain the relevant hygienic standards and to keep your distance from others.We have all heard this advice dozens of times in the last few days. This makes it all the more important to consider them constantly and, above all, to follow them.
  • Our immediate crisis management is working: While ensuring your safety is our first priority, our second priority is to continue serving our customers in the way they are used to. We anticipate some issues with suppliers of raw materials in various countries but have reached out to alternative producers to make sure that we will be able to uphold our production in all regions worldwide.
    Governments around the world do everything they can to manage this crisis. This includes measures that have so far unseen impact on private and business life. As a consequence, we have seen in some countries an abrupt end of customer demand, the only sensible solution for us is to stop several of our affected operations on very short notice. Management is in close discussions with customers, suppliers, and public authorities on how to mitigate the impact on our business.
  • We are ready to adapt to changing circumstances: The long-term impact of the Corona Crisis on our business heavily depends on the length of the crisis and is hard to predict right now. We want to let you know that we as a company have the necessary resources to face such challenges. Thanks to our decentralized structure and our financial strengths, we have the necessary flexibility to react to rapidly changing situations. As a long-term oriented family business with strong values, we will continue to think beyond the short-term horizon in any decision we have to take.
  • Our crisis management teams will effectively coordinate efforts across the countries: We have a number of local crisis teams in place that are managing this situation close to the regional requirements and needs. In addition, we installed a crisis management team on global level led personally by us to coordinate all these necessary local activities and to navigate Knauf effectively and successfully through these challenging times.

We know that many of you have a lot of questions right now and are deeply worried. Although we do not have answers to all these questions and concerns today, we will keep you informed about important developments and decisions on Group level. Also, please do not hesitate to get in touch with your manager to address any concerns. The leadership team is here for you, we are in this together. We as General Partners will keep you closely informed about important developments and decisions on Group level.

California Shelter-in-Place

As you may know, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, issued a state-wide “shelter in place” last night that mandates all residents ‘stay at home’ to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Residents are asked to remain indoors and limit outdoor movement to what is “absolutely essential.”

Essential services will stay open such as pharmacies, grocery stores, takeout and delivery restaurants, and banks.

According to the order, Californians in 16 critical sectors are to continue working. Those include emergency services, energy and critical manufacturing.

Our manufacturing operations in Shasta Lake, which supports critical infrastructure and construction activities, including housing construction, is considered part of the critical manufacturing sector, and will remain open. Of course, if you are showing any symptoms of illness or have been in contact with someone who has confirmed COVID-19, please stay home.

The steps we’ve taken over the last few weeks have been designed to ensure we are doing everything we can to protect our employees, their families, and the Shasta Lake community, while safely running our plant. Some of those measures include:

  • A complete audit of the plant to identify better ways to sanitize and enable social distancing
  • Increased frequency of sanitization across the plant, especially in high traffic areas
  • Creation of additional spaces for schedule breaks
  • Altered schedules to limit the number of people in common areas
We’re all working hard to navigate the challenges brought to us by the Coronavirus. We are making decisions quickly and thoughtfully using the best information currently available and in accordance with CDC recommendations as well as national, state and local government mandates. As other states develop and issue orders affecting businesses within that state, we will promptly assess and advise you regarding your continuing plant operations.

Although none of us knows how the next few days and weeks will unfold, we continue to monitor the COVID-19 outbreak daily and you have my commitment that as we assess the environment and implement changes, we are putting the health and safety of our employees, their families and the community at the center.
